The Quemetco facility is a hazardous waste facility located at 720 South 7th Avenue, City of Industry, California (Facility). The Facility is approximately 13 acres in size and operates a secondary lead smelter engaged in the recycling of lead, primarily from lead-acid automotive batteries. The Facility is located in a predominantly commercial/industrial area and is bounded to the north by the San Jose Creek, to the west by South 7th Avenue, to the east by commercial businesses, and to the south by Salt Lake Avenue.
Since 1959 the Facility has been used for recycling lead acid batteries and other lead scrap materials in order to recover lead alloy product.
The Facility is regulated and inspected by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the lead agency that is also overseeing ongoing environmental investigations at residential and commercial areas in proximity to the battery-recycling plant.
